The Society of Professional Journalists honored the The Independent Collegian, University of Toledo’s independent student-run newspaper, as the best non-daily newspaper in the region in its annual Mark of Excellence competition.
Senior Paris Black, an English major at UT, also won SPJ’s regional Mark of Excellence award for column writing.
“It is such a great honor,” said Amanda Eggert, Editor-in-chief of IC. “All of our hard work has now payed off and we have an award that says so. It is a reminder that what we’re doing matters.”
The SPJ region 4 includes Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and parts of western Pennsylvania. The winners of the awards will go on to a national competition, according to a press release by IC advisor Erik Gable.
The awards were announced April 5 in Columbus at SPJ’s spring conference attended by representatives of the student newspaper, Eggert said.
“It was an all day event…. The (top award) was one of the last awards,” said Eggert, who became Editor-in-Chief in April. “ We were all really excited.”
The IC also took home the following awards: Danielle Gamble, a senior and former IC editor-in-chief, finalist in the feature writing category; Jackie Kellett, finalist in the general news photography category, and Crystal Esquilin, finalist in the editorial cartooning category.
The Collegian split from the University in 2000, moving its headquarters off campus and adopting the name The Independent Collegian. The newspaper is now operated by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, the Collegian Media Foundation.
SPJ is dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism, said it’s Website. The Mark of Excellence Awards honors the best in college journalism. Judged at the regional and national level, the annual competition offers 39 categories in newspapers, magazines, photography, radio, television and online journalism.
