For the 10th time in the past eight years, a former UT golfer will attempt to qualify for the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic.
Piyathida Chaiyapan of Thailand will participate in the Aug. 6 qualifier looking to earn a spot in the Aug. 9-12 LPGA tournament against the best of professional women’s golf. The field includes 18 of the world’s top 20 players.
“Having a member of our program participate in this qualifier is one of the highlights of the year for us and a very memorable experience for our student-athletes,” Toledo head coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. “We’re very thankful for the tremendous support tournament director Judd Silverman has provided to our program.”
Chaiyapan competed from 2009-11 with the Rockets and led the team with a 76.9 stroke average in her final season, the third lowest total in UT history. That same season, the Second-Team All-MAC performer lost in a playoff at the MAC Championship.
Of the six golfers to previously attempt to qualify for the tournament over the past eight years, only Tammy Clelland qualified in 2006. She later missed the 36-hole cut.
The Jamie Farr Toledo Classic will take place at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania.
