Retirement Guys: Living life to the fullestWritten by Nolan Baker Mark Clair | | email@example.com
Live it up.
Get out there and do it. If you believe in God, I (Mark) don’t think he intended us to sit around and mope and never do anything fun. I think he created this world partly for our enjoyment. Whether you believe in creation or not, it’s a big world out there with many amazing things to see and experience. So get moving.
A couple of unexpected deaths in the family have caused several of us to re-evaluate how we are living our lives and how we are spending our time. Our cousin Ron lost his father at a very young age and my wife Lisa lost her mother very unexpectedly. We have come to the realization that time goes by quick. No one is promised tomorrow. I am sure that if you are over 50 you will agree with this.
Cousin Ron said, “Darn it, we’re going to start experiencing life. We’re going to start doing things now rather than wait until later.” This statement resulted in Ron and his wife Kathy, Patti (Ron’s sister) and her husband Mickey, deciding to go on an Alaskan cruise in 2011 to celebrate Patti and Mickey’s 25th anniversary. We got invited to join them and jumped at the chance. It was a great time. There were many highlights, one of them being a helicopter ride out to a glacier and walking around with our hands lifted in the air in triumph like we had reached the summit. We made it, Ma! As a result of the trip we all bonded and decided to get together every couple years for an adventure. We kind of feel like our own little Rat Pack (don’t know if I am Dean Martin or Joey Bishop).
Time to live it up again
Guess what? It is now Ron and Kathy’s 25th anniversary. They are headed to Norway to explore the Torp family roots. Yep, we got invited to go along. Lisa is a Torp on her mom’s side, so it will be a time to explore where the family originated. We will be taking a Norwegian Fjords Cruise that starts out in London England. Cousin Ron is a good guy to know because not only is he a great guy, but he is a guy that always has “got a guy.” If we ask him who he might know for helping with a particular task or problem he always says, “I got a guy.” Well, amazingly, but not surprisingly, Ron has “got a guy” in London. His guy is a detective for none other than Scotland Yard! His “guy” has us set up with a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster (Parliament) and a guided tour of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Pretty cool. Who knows, maybe we can catch a little bit of Wimbledon.
You can live it up, too
With a little planning, you can do some fun things, too. Part of The Retirement Guys’ philosophy is to encourage those we work with to figure out what their bucket list experiences are and to actually stop procrastinating and go and live them out. It is all part of a thing we call The Retirement Game Plan, which evaluates several areas of retirement and pre-retirement planning, making sure we are taking steps to manage your money, protect your assets and efficiently plan your estate. Part of money management is making sure we have enough to live out the rest of our lives and understanding what things will cost and how much we will need. My partner Nolan Baker is great at helping position dollars to generate income, have money for emergencies, and yes, have money to go on some trips, etc. Recently a client came into the office talking about how they like to travel. Nolan asked if they would like to set up a plan that would generate money every year for the next 20 years to go on a trip. The client said, “You can do that?” In many cases it is a matter of planning.

The Retirement Guys are such believers in helping our clients enjoy life, we recently brought in expert Rebecca Monroe from Avoya Travel for a travel workshop. The meeting was completely full and Rebecca presented 10 Travel Tips that were greatly received and appreciated by those in attendance. I learned how to be prepared for out of country credit card fees and discovered I was going to pay a 2.8 percent fee if I was not careful. Feel free to contact Rebecca at (567) 225-7794 or RebeccaMonroe@AvoyaTravel.com to get your copy of 10 Travel Tips. Tell her The Retirement Guys sent you. You can get information on The Retirement Guys Game Plan by going to www.retirementguysnetwork.com and sending us an email request. It’s a great big world. So, get out there and see it.
