Toledo will host one of California’s wine pioneers Sunday, Aug. 5, when Bonny Doon Vineyard’s Randall Grahm visits the Glass City for two area events.

Grahm, founder of Bonny Doon Vineyard and a 2010 Vintners Hall of Fame inductee, created a new frontier in winemaking in the early 1980s by cultivating European Rhone varietal grapes in California. He was also one of the first advocates of “non-cork closures” – screwcaps – and an ahead-of-the-curve practitioner of organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The results of Grahm’s pursuits include Boony Doon’s Le Cigare Voulant, a blended red currently awaiting its twenty-fifth bottling.

On Aug. 5, Grahm will be on hand for a pay-per-sample Bonny Doon tasting from noon to 3 p.m. at Walt Churchill’s Market, 3320 Briarfield Blvd. in Maumee. That evening, Grahm and his Bonny Doon wines will be featured at the first winemaker dinner at the new Registry Bistro, 144 N. Superior St. in Toledo.
