UT swim team wins MAC Title
Written by Zach Davis | | zdavis@toledofreepress.comThe Toledo swimming and diving team won its second Mid-American Conference championship in three seasons on Feb. 25, edging out the field led by Ohio 635-612.
During the three-day championships, Toledo won nine events and set 12 school records, eight pool records, five championship meet records and four MAC records.
“It feels great to be a champion,” said UT head coach Liz Hinkleman, who was named MAC Coach of the Year in just her second season. “The girls never gave up and fought hard in every single race. I’m so proud of them for being able to accomplish our season-long goal of winning the MAC, and to break several records in the process was very exciting.”
Senior Laura Lindsay won her second individual conference championship, taking first in the 200-meter breaststroke with a pool, meet and MAC record time of 2:09.79. Classmate Claire Leichty defended her 1,650 freestyle championship with a meet record time of 16:11.80; sophomore Beth Rogers won the 200 butterfly in a pool, meet and MAC record time of 1:57.87.
The team also had a league-high five players named First Team All-MAC: junior Carly Harter, sophomore Rachel Johnson, Leichty, Lindsay and Rogers. Sophomore Christina Noens and junior Kirsten Smith were named Second Team All-MAC.
