University of Toledo gives local businesses human resource honorsWritten by Paige Shermis | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Legendary football coach Woody Hayes once said, “You win with people.” Clint Longenecker, professor of Management at the College of Business and Innovation (COBI) at the University of Toledo, agrees.
Longenecker is the chair of the Awards Selection Committee at COBI, which presented its 16th annual Human Resource (HR) Management Award for Excellence in May.
Spangler Candy Company and Spangler Candy Company received the award, and Directions Credit Union and the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters were recognized as finalists.
“The origin of this award goes back to 1998. The Human Resource Department at the College of Business and Innovation has always been one of the better [departments] in the country. We were in the top 44 this year. We have a long legacy of having our students do well,” Longenecker said.
The award is a joint venture between Ranstad Engineering, a company based in the Netherlands, the Toledo Area Human Resource Association (TAHRA) and the Employers Association.
“The university runs the award [with the] set purpose of recognizing outstanding employers with great employment practices,” Longenecker said.
The award has three main criteria.
“[We look at if] their HR practices support their competitive position in the marketplace — if their people practices are allowing and helping them to compete. Innovation and creativity is another one, so they are doing things that are new. The third one is impact — how powerful their HR practices are in the organization’s culture,” Longenecker said.
Longenecker referred to Spangler and Sun Federal as “good, solid places to work” that have managed to create competitive advantage in extremely competitive marketplaces.
“Spangler was recognized by working in a competitive workplace, but with a unionized workforce, a partnership. If you look at them as an organization, they are partners in making Dum Dum suckers and candy canes,” Longenecker said of the company, which was founded in 1906.
Similarly, Sun Federal takes great pains to hire the right employees for the job, he said.
“Sun Federal Credit Union [does] a remarkable job. It is one of the best examples where the organization is all about people. They have really developed their workforce and making sure that the people who work there are the right kind of people,” Longenecker said.
To advertise the contest, COBI put out an announcement in December through the TEHRA organization, which is the trade association for all the human resources leaders in the area.
Niki Mosier is the director of human capital at Spangler Candy.
“Basically what our function is, is to balance the needs of the company and the needs of the people. That in my opinion is what makes an HR professional successful,” Mosier said.
Mosier said that the HR department at Spangler holds the belief that valued people become valuable.
“This award is for everyone at Spangler Candy, and it recognizes the achievement of our people. This award highlights all the things that we do right, and also identifies areas that we can continue to improve in,” Mosier said
April Hammer is the human resource/employee relations manager at Sun Federal.
“We are excited and honored to receive this prestigious award. Our mission of people caring about people makes our job in HR easy. Doing what’s right is a principle we live by. Sun Federal’s caring spirit is present within the human resource, training and development team; we continually strive to show we value our employees and improve the quality of our employees’ lives so they can grow personally and professionally,” she said in an email.
Although each company that is successful in HR is different, they all have one trait in common, Longenecker said.
“Each of the firms that was a recipient has their own unique story, but it really comes back to the fact they have really strong leadership on the top of the organization that puts a great emphasis on people,” Longenecker said.
