The Gold Knight: I tried to be a millionaire

Ten minutes. Thirty questions. One No. 2 pencil. One Scantron sheet of paper. One test.

I felt like I was back in college. The pressure was on. Except I couldn’t study for this test.

.

The prize for doing well was a trip to the next audition phase for “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” the syndicated game show with Meredith Vieira.

The clock started and I looked at the test. The topics ranged from history to pop culture to random trivia tidbits. If I didn’t know the answer, I guessed and moved on.

“Five minutes remain,” said the proctor.

I finished and went over my answers; this was going to be interesting.

“Time’s up.”

The 200 of us in the room — the second group of the day — turned in our papers and waited for the results. We each had an identifying number on our test. The staff would grade the tests and whoever reached the threshold for correct answers would have their number called out loud.

The results came in and the proctor began reading the numbers. The number of the woman sitting next to me — her second “Millionaire” audition — was called and she shrieked. About two dozen numbers were called. Mine, number 27, was not.

And there ended my chance at $1 million — in the first round.

But getting up at 5:30 a.m., driving over to the Hilton Garden Inn at Levis Commons by 6:15 and standing in line for an hour didn’t seem like such a waste.

The weather was nice and spirits were high. There would be hundreds of others who also did not make the grade and we could all say we tried. Besides, the hope for seeing a Toledoan on the show still exists. That’s something we can be proud of.

I wished the woman next to me good luck on her next phase — an interview with a producer in the afternoon — and went home. But I didn’t leave empty-handed.

I got to keep my “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” pencil.

Even though there were hundreds waiting, the line moved quickly, with 200 hopefuls taking the test at a time.
