Altvater: LPGA Tour Kicks Off 2015 At The Coates Golf ChampionshipWritten by Fred Altvater | | BackNine@toledofreepress.com
The LPGA Tour will kick off its 2015 season with a brand new event the Coates Golf Championship, January 26-31, presented by R&L Carriers in Ocala, Florida. It is the first time in several years the women have begun the season in Florida in January.
The 120-woman field includes nine of the Top 10 women players in the world, who will all be vying for a piece of the $1.5 million purse and valuable Race to the CME Globe points.
With the NFL’s Super Bowl set to be contested on Sunday, as well as, the final round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Coates Golf Championship will start on Wednesday and the champion will be crowned on Saturday.
The event has added a bit of glitz with John Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston joining Morgan Pressel as Honorary Co-Chairmen of the event.
It will be hard to top the exciting action the LPGA Tour provided in 2014. Young stars like Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson won big. Michelle Wie broke through for her first major championship victory at the U.S. Women’s Open and Stacy Lewis played consistent golf all season long and was named Player of the Year.
Minjee Lee, Ariya Jutanugarn and Charley Hull have earned LPGA Tour cards for this season and will join the host of young stars trying to unseat proven veterans like, Lewis, Christy Kerr, Paula Creamer, Inbee Park, Suzann Pettersen and So Yeon Ryu.
The LPGA Tour has a lot to offer golf fans. The fields are deeper than ever and the competition to come out on top is even more fierce.
