Dream Zone: My dog turned into a fish

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

Dear Lauri,

I dreamed that my dad and dog and I were on a plane when the wings broke off and we crashed into the ocean. We survived but my dog had turned into a fish. With its fins and tail severed and died in my arms. Also the ocean turned out to be a huge pool.   – Candice 31, Middletown, NY

Lauri: The plane crash suggests something you had high hopes for came crashing down instead of reaching new and higher levels. This most likely has to do with a relationship since your dog was a part of the dream. Dogs can usually be connected to a relationship in your life where there is friendship and loyalty. The breaking off of the wings suggests there has been a break up.

Your dog turned into a fish because your dreaming mind is telling you there are other fish in the sea… and at the same time another part of you is telling you, “No more relationships for now,” hence the fish dying in your arms. The fins and tail are severed just like the wings of the plane that broke off, which means your wiser inner dreaming mind is telling you it is best that you sever ties. The ocean represents the vast, even overwhelming idea of dating again… it shrinks down to a pool because your dream is trying to show you the “dating pool” isn’t as overwhelming as it may seem at the moment. You can totally handle it! Don’t be overwhelmed or afraid. You deserve a healthy life companionship.

Candice replies: That interpretation was entirely spot on. I did just go through an awful breakup with a guy that had turned abusive towards me. I knew the dream stemmed from the breakup and am finding it probably is best to sever all ties from that person. The explanation was extremely helpful Thank you so much!

Dream Zone: Man tries to smother me with pillow

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

“Sleep is the glue that binds new information into the brain.” – Robert Stickgold, Ph.D

Dear Lauri,

I have woke up screaming twice in the last two weeks from the same dream (although I was only asleep less than an hour each time the dream occurred). A man is standing over me trying to smoother me with a pillow. I wake up screaming and trying to fight back. The man’s face is in a white cloud and his facial outline is black and white much like a police sketch drawing. The facial features are clear but I do not know this man. Please help!

– Kristina 38, Wausau, WI

Lauri: Fear not! This dream does not mean there is some shady character with less than good intentions out there somewhere that you need to worry about. In fact, that shady character is either a part of you or some part of your life that is metaphorically smothering you. What, in the last two weeks has really been crowding in on you, intruding on your peace of mind and causing you to feel powerless? Is it a depression? An overwhelming issue? Is it a situation that seems a little “sketchy”? The fact that the man’s face is in a cloud suggests that you may be having a hard time “facing” the reality of this situation or you are having a hard time seeing how you are going to get through it. Rest assured you will, whether it be time or whether it be that you need to work harder at the issue, you will get through.

Kristina replies: A dear friend of mine passed away unexpectedly at the end of 2009. He did not have any close family members so a group of friends decided to sprinkle some of his ashes in a memorial garden we created. The dedication of the garden and ash sprinkling took place this past weekend and I was a key person in planning the event. Even though it has been over a year and a half since his death, I miss him terribly and his death is hard to accept. Thanks so much,

Dream Zone: I sliced my heart open

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

“Sleep is the glue that binds new information into the brain.” – Robert Stickgold, Ph.D

Dear Lauri,

I dreamed I was at work and my boss and I were both shaving our legs at the backroom sink. Then I noticed a single hair on my chest over my heart and tried to shave it but the razor sliced an artery which I could see hanging there, pouring out blood. The dream ended with me driving myself to the hospital ER. – Denise 48, Boise, ID

Lauri: First of all … ew! Secondly, hairy legs and chest hair are both rather manly physical traits, but to the dreaming mind they are your male, assertive behaviors. It seems your dreaming mind is telling you to try not to be too manly somewhere in your life. Are you too “bossy” and assertive in a relationship or in general? Slicing your heart open to the point of blood gushing out suggests you may have recently “poured your heart out” to someone. Also, the damage to the heart is most likely connected to heart break in real life. The ER visit means your inner self is in emergency mode. It wants this emotional pain to heal ASAP.

Denise replies: My husband laughs as I read this to him! Yes, I have a history of being too bossy and assertive with him. The heartbreak is likely related to my only daughter getting married two weeks ago and moving far away. I’ve been feeling a pretty sad about that. I guess I need to make efforts to connect with her. Thanks!

Fascinating Dream Fact:

According to a longitudinal study conducted by Bill Tramini that appeared in the medical journal “Pediatrics,” 62 percent of children have regular nightmares, or one every two weeks, during preschool age.

Dream Zone: Lung cancer

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

“Let me not mar that perfect dream

By an auroral stain,

But so adjust my daily night

That it will come again.” – Emily Dickinson

Dear Lauri,

I had a dream last night that I was in the hospital for some reason and on the outside of one of the machines in my room I saw the diagnosis of lung cancer. I asked the nurse if this was true and she said it was. I saw the tumor on film, it was very big. I hadn’t received a prognosis or told anyone else about my diagnosis. – Cindy 41, Council Bluffs, IA

Lauri: Your dream doesn’t mean this is anything you need to actually physically worry about. Cancer in a dream means there is an unhealthy situation in your waking life that is growing, getting worse and beginning to eat away at you. You were in the hospital for something else, which means you are already actively trying to make some waking life situation better. You also had not been officially diagnosed in the dream, which means you may not have officially spoken up about this issue or had anyone else in waking life agree with you about it yet. None the less, your dream is showing you that if you allow this cancerous situation to continue, it’s going to kill who you are meant to be.

Cindy replies: Wow it all makes perfect sense. First off, I have recently left a nine year relationship. There are children involved so the relationship has not completely dissolved. The other person in the relationship continues to contact me daily, via texts or phone, begging and pleading to be kind and loving, etc. I have been eating myself sick, literally, not really sure why though. Maybe all the stress. I can definitely see that continued contact with him is unhealthy and this is becoming a growing problem, for both of us. I do absolutely feel like I am killing who I am really meant to be Thank you!

Dream Zone: Ghosts pushing open my door

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

Dear Lauri,

I keep having this frightful nightmare of me trying to close a door in which someone or something keeps pushing from the other side. In my dream I feel that on the other side is a spirit or ghost that’s pushing through. Freaky! These types of dreams happen at least once a week for at least the last year. Please help. – Candy 31, Eagle River, WI

Lauri: The ghost/spirit is most likely something that is currently haunting you, something from your past (distant or recent) that is lingering in your psyche and bothering you. You’ve got a time frame: a year. What would you say has been bothering you or causing you upset the most for the past year? The pushing you are feeling in the dream may also be something. Are you feeling pushed around by someone or is there a lot of pressure, at say work, that is really getting to you? If so, your dream seems to be showing you that you are unable to “close the door on work” once you get home. These dreams will keep happening until you find a way to leave work… at work.

Candy replies: THAT’S IT! I am so not able to “close the door on work” & a ton of pressure. It’s a constant battle! I haven’t found the perfect outlet to this issue. A couple things I’ve tried have helped a little, but obviously not enough. What a break through! Now if I could just figure out how to take my mind off things better, I’d get back to my Johnny Depp dreams.

Dream Zone: Raw porkchop

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

“The best reason for having dreams is that in dreams no reasons are necessary.” ~Ashleigh Brilliant

Dear Lauri,

Last night I dreamed that my grandmother came into my bedroom and offered me a pork chop. I noticed it was raw after biting into it. I spit it out and yelled at her saying I didn’t want it. She took it from me and said, “That is the right answer.”

– Tammy 32, Parkville, MD

Lauri: Unless your grandmother is a lousy cook, she’s actually a symbol for your own wisdom (grandparents in dreams often stand in for wisdom we have gained through age and experience). She offers you a raw pork chop! Eew!! Do you feel you have been handed “a raw deal” in life or handed a raw deal recently? Your grandmother, your inner wisdom, tells you something very important. She tells you that you’ve got it right! In other words, you are refusing to take on the attitude that you are a victim, that you were dealt a bad hand in life and that is precisely the attitude that will help you overcome anything!

Tammy replies: Wow is all I can say. I have had feelings of getting a raw deal in life. I never knew my father and have a dysfunctional relationship with my mother and have felt, for a very long time, I was defeated even before my life began. I have been angry about the situation surrounding the events of my life and birth. My family NEVER shared much about my father and so I have been searching for him with no help from them for the last 12 years. and in December I found him! I am very proud of myself how I’ve been able to maintain my emotions thru this roller coaster ride over the last 3 months.

Fascinating Dream Fact:

Did you know that if your eyes were pinned open your vision would shut down as soon as you fell asleep? But once you start dreaming, you will see what is going on in your dream, not what is actually before you in real life!

Dream Zone: Small creature

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

Dear Lauri,

I was trying to care for a small bird/grasshopper creature by feeding it. It hopped on my finger and I was worried it would get out and get killed because it was so delicate. What does this mean?

– Alli 52, Portland, OR

Lauri: Just as you are caring for this creature in your dream, what are you currently caring for or nurturing in waking life? Is there a project you are working on that requires you to “feed” it with creative ideas? The delicate nature of the creature in your dream may be connected to the frailty of this project or idea. Is it something that could very easily end, fall apart or fall through if you aren’t careful? The bird part of the creature may mean it is connected to some sort of sense of freedom you desire OR something that you hope will take off and soar. The grasshopper aspect of the creature may be your concern that you are jumping into something a little too quickly. Let me know what you think.

Alli replies: The project must be my webcomic I’ve been working on for a year and a half. The frailty plays into my fear of not having a good idea for the next installment. I was worried about that yesterday and today and I always think, “Well, that’s it; This is all going to fall apart!” And your bird/grasshopper assessment is right on. I both hope this project will set me free and will take/hop off. Thank you! That was perfect.

Fascinating Sleep Fact: An online survey of 1,408 couples, conducted by the Sleep Council of England, found that 1 in 4 people regularly retreats to a spare room or sofa to get a good night’s sleep. The preference for separate spaces has even begun to affect home design. According to the National Association of Home Builders, there’s been a steady increase in the number of requests for “two-master bedroom” homes since 1990, prompting the organization to predict that by 2015, 60 percent of all custom upscale homes will be built with two “owner suites.

Dream Zone: Dead bodies on a train

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

“A dream is an invaluable commentator and illuminator of life. Listen to the wisdom of the dream.” – Carl Jung

Dear Lauri,

I am waiting for a train. A white train finally comes along. When I got on, I saw there were dead bodies wrapped from top to toe in white bandages placed on the seats. I realized that it was the mortuary train. I walked around and was puzzled that two or three men were alive and standing up with just their bottoms wrapped in bandage (like a diaper). They were waiting for the rest of their body to be wrapped up. This disturbed me so much, I woke up. – Greer 62, UK

Lauri: What in waking life are you waiting for? What seems to be taking a long time to happen? The fact that you are waiting for a train is a clue. It suggests that you may be wondering if you are “on the right track” as far as a certain idea or goal is concerned. Since the train is white it may mean a new direction is needed or you may need to start over in some way. Once embarking you discover that it is a mortuary train… yikes! This is a good indication that you may feel you are headed towards a “dead end” in some area of your life. As disturbing as the dream is, it is giving you a solution, and that solution comes in the form of the men that are still alive. Those men represent your male qualities, meaning the parts of you that can be assertive, take action, “grow a pair” and get the job done. Grab hold of and use these powerful qualities before they “die off.”

Greer replies: I’ve been out of work for twelve months!! I was hoping for a dream that would point me in the right direction. Now it seems everything is pointing me to go in a different direction. Thank you for this interpretation.

Dream Zone: Stuck in a hotel

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

“Dreams are the language of creation.” – Bernie Siegel

Dear Dream Zone,

I dreamt I was with my boyfriend at a convention in a hotel. We had a good time but when we tried to leave through the parking garage we encountered a mob on the street that prevented us from leaving. There were fires and chaos and the police were murdering people. We tried to go back up the elevators through the parking garage but two corrupt cops stopped us and tried to beat us up. That’s when I woke up. – Melanie 29, Virginia Beach, Virginia

Lauri: Sounds like your inner mind is concerned that your relationship with your beau may not be going anywhere! When our dreams take place in a hotel it means our current situation is temporary. Dating is temporary because the couple will inevitably break up or marry. The parking garage also points to your relationship being “parked” and not moving forward. All that chaos surrounding you in the dream reflects your anxiety about the relationship coming to a nasty end if things don’t change and the corrupt police are a definite sign of confusion as to what is the right thing to do. Step outside the situation and try to see if one of you is rushing things or if one of you is holding the relationship back. Hopefully you can find a way to be on the same page, if not then just like in your dream, dooms day may be near! Good luck.

Melanie responds: Wow, I’m so thoroughly impressed! You couldn’t have gotten any closer to the truth with this interpretation! Before even reading your response today I broke up with my beau yesterday. I guess my mind was telling me that it was doomed from the start. Fortunately, we are still really close friends.

Dream Zone: Out of Pepper

Written by Lauri Loewenberg | | lloewenberg@toledofreepress.com

Dear Lauri,

Last night I had a dream I was taking a shower, then I walked downstairs and my grandmother (who died in 2002) was really upset because we had ran out of pepper. I began to look for the pepper in the kitchen, but my grandma was right that we were out. She was really upset about it! I told her I’d drive her to the store to get some. I ran up to my room to get the keys and there was a moth flying around. I tried killing it numerous times, but kept missing. I finally smashed it with a shoe and I felt relieved. Then I woke up.

– Adam 24, Florida

Lauri: Lots of endings in this dream. Is there anything in your life that has run its course, that has ended or that you have cleansed yourself of? The grandmother may mean some situation has really gotten old and the lack of pepper may mean something – perhaps a relationship – has lost its spice and excitement. The moth may be your attraction to someone or something, but the attraction turned into a nuisance and your dream is showing you did the right thing by putting an end to it.

Adam replies: There is a guy I used to work with that I have been intensely attracted to for a long time. After my good-bye party at work I told him how I felt. Unfortunately, he only liked me as a friend. Therefore, that attraction grew old and lost its spice and excitement. So I decided to cut off all ties with him. I deleted him off my facebook and out of my phone so I wouldn’t be tempted to reach out to him. I’ve been feeling a lot better. I’ve been going out, meeting new people, and have a lot to look forward to now.
