The 94th PGA Championship will tee off this week from the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, S.C.

Kiawah is a barrier island just off of the Carolina coast and is located approximately 15 miles south of Charleston, S.C. It is primarily a gated beach and golf community with all of the amenities of a first-class resort.

The tournament will be held on the Ocean Course, a Pete Dye design that has been recognized as one of the most difficult golf courses on the East Coast. It was host to the 1991 Ryder Cup, which was dubbed the “War on the Shore.”

The course will play to 7,676 yards and a par of 72. It is an American links type design featuring vast waste areas affected by heavy winds from the Atlantic Ocean.

Many of the greens are slightly elevated with severe runoff areas. Approach shots that wander too close to the edge of the greens will roll down and away from the pin.

Many of the holes were carved out of a salt marsh, which will create problems for the players. Deeply set waste areas with steep walls will penalize any ball straying too far from the fairway.

Add the gusty winds and this golf course is not for the weak of heart.

Keegan Bradley won the 2011 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. It was his first PGA Tour win and the first major tournament in which he was eligible to participate. Bradley won last week at the WGC-Bridgestone in Akron, Ohio.

Tiger Woods is looking for his 15th major title and has not won a major championship since the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and a host of other top professionals will be on hand to deny Woods another win.

The PGA Championship can be seen from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 8-9 on TNT Network.

TNT will offer coverage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10-11, with CBS picking up the coverage from 2 to 7 p.m.
