New Maumee practice provides cosmetic laser servicesWritten by Brigitta Burks | News Editor | BBurks@toledofreepress.com
A local doctor and his wife, also a nurse, opened Luxe Laser Vein & Body Center in Maumee last month. Their practice offers a variety of cosmetic treatments, many using advanced laser technology.
“[The practice is] going very well. We’ve had a lot of patients come in,” said the practice physician Dr. Wade Banker. “We’re a little busier than I thought we would be at this point.”
“Our names are getting out there; the things we are striving for are happening,” said Nicole Banker, who is a nurse at the practice in addition to being Wade’s wife.
The couple runs the center, which hosted a grand opening on April 17, at 1500 Holland Road, Maumee. The center also employs Jennifer Bugbee, an aesthetician specializing in microdermabrasion, facials and peels.
Wade said that the practice’s lasers come from the laser manufacturing and developing company Cynosure. Wade said five lasers offered at his practice are among the most advanced available.
“Nobody in Northwest Ohio has this lineup of the latest generation,” Wade said. “There may be many great physicians out there doing these procedures, but you’re only as good as your best laser. There is no way around it.”
Luxe Laser offers several services, including tattoo and hair removal, facials, chemical peels and botox treatments. The practice’s most popular service so far has been treatment of spider and varicose veins, Nicole said.
These treatments and others can help improve a patient’s level of confidence, she added.
“Most of my patients say, ‘I’m really not a vain person,” Nicole said. “They just wanted these little improvements that give them self esteem. These women come in and say, ‘I just wanted to wear shorts in the summer.’”
The procedure isn’t just cosmetic since spider and varicose veins can cause achiness or a heavy feeling, Nicole added.
Smartlipo and CoolSculpting, both fat removal services, are also gaining in popularity at the practice, the Bankers said.
Smartlipo is minimally invasive and can remove up to 75-80 percent of fat in the desired area, Wade said.
“It’s immediate results and it’s painless, but it does require a little numbing of the skin,” he said. “[The fat is removed] through a tiny little hold … and then we melt the fat, and then we literally just suck it out.”
CoolSculpting, which uses a device to suck and then freeze fat, is noninvasive and can remove about 30 percent of fat in the desired area, Wade said. Results aren’t as immediate as with Smartlipo and can take up to 8 weeks to appear, he added.
Luxe Laser also offers SmartSkin laser treatment for skin resurfacing. This laser treatment works to remove wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and large pores, Wade said.
“It’s basically a face lift without getting a face lift at a third of the price or less,” he said.
Wade said he makes sure to talk clients through procedures and put them at ease if they’re nervous about laser procedures.
“I’m here. I call my patients after work; I talk to them in the evenings. I really take the time,” he said.
The couple also plans to use their practice to give back to the community. The practice works with the New Beginnings program, which offers free radiation mark/tattoo removal to people who have had cancer.
Wade said he is passionate about working with people who have had cancer.
“Personally I’ve lost family members to cancer and I’ve treated [oncology patients] in my practice for the last 15 years,” he said. “I don’t think [the patients] want to look at the radiation marks as a reminder so this can help.”
Wade said that it took the Bankers a little more than a year to open Luxe Laser. Wade, a Cincinnati-area native, first came to Toledo to attend the Medical University of Ohio before taking jobs in Cleveland and Mississippi. He later returned to Toledo to work for Mercy until he decided he wanted to go out on his own.
Wade met Nicole, then an emergency room nurse, at Mercy St. Anne Hospital. The two married in 2011.
“My wife and I work really well together. … It’s really become like a nice family-owned-and-operated place and we’re just all about making people happier,” he said.
