Koi safely awaiting Fallen Timbers pond upgradeWritten by Jay Hathaway | | firstname.lastname@example.org
The koi pond at the Shops at Fallen Timbers in Maumee is slated to receive an upgrade, but all the koi were removed before the water was drained, a shopping center representative said.
Fallen Timbers’ senior marketing manager Heidi Yanok said she was aware of concerns from people who noticed the water had been drained and were worried about the fish.
“I was surprised it became a big deal so fast, but the koi were taken out of the pond are being kept safe,” she said.
According to Yanok, more than 500 koi were taken out of the pond, and are currently staying in a tank.
As for rumors that some fish were left for dead, Yanok said some of the feeder fish — a type of goldfish— remained.
“We drained it down so that there would still be enough water for them to stay, but unfortunately, a few of them didn’t make it,” she said.
The pond is set to reopen sometime around the end of May with its new filtration system. Problems with murky water were the impetus for the change, Yanok said.
“It’s going to be a clearer, prettier pond,” she said.
