Toledo’s student-athletes set school record GPA
Written by Zach Davis | | zdavis@toledofreepress.comToledo athletic director Mike O’Brien announced this week that the UT student-athletes combined to post a school record 3.266 GPA in the 2012 spring semester.
“The academic performance of our student-athletes has been truly outstanding in recent years, but this past semester’s in grade point average represents a new level of achievement in the classroom,” O’Brien said.
Breaking the school’s GPA record has been a common occurrence recently. The Rockets have broke the GPA record in four of the last five semesters and edged out its 3.167 record from the 2011 fall semester with the 3.266 mark in the spring. Additionally, UT student-athletes have recorded at least an average 3.1 GPA in 12 of their last 14 semesters.
Leading the way among Toledo’s programs was the volleyball team, whose 3.641 GPA narrowly edged out the soccer team’s 3.622 as the top performance at UT. The men’s tennis team led all men’s programs at the school with a 3.446 GPA. Of the 15 programs at Toledo, 14 recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The lone program that didn’t was football, whose GPA information was not distributed by the school in its press release.
“I think it says a lot that all of our teams are excelling academically,” O’Brien said. “This isn’t a situation where some sports are doing well and others are just getting by. We are excelling across the board. As always, I also want to commend our student-athletes as well as the coaches, athletic department academic staff and university faculty members whose dedication plays a big role in their success.”
Among the teams, 26 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA while 41 percent earned spots on the dean’s list with a 3.5 GPA or higher. The Rockets also had a record 70.9 percent achieve a 3.0 GPA or better for the semester.
