George Carruth returns to celebrate 30 years of sculptingWritten by Matt Liasse | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Sculptor George Carruth will celebrate 30 years of his work at Garden Smiles the next two weekends.
During his annual visit, Carruth will sign handcrafted sculptures and meet with fans and collectors of his art at his store, 211 Mechanic Street in Waterville. He will make an appearance from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 and noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 15.
“Ever since the first artist signing back in 1992, we knew we wanted to continue this tradition,” his wife and business partner, Deb Carruth said in a news release. “Meeting fans face to face allows us to really get to know them, as well as get their feedback. We especially enjoy hearing the stories of why they choose a design and for whom. These stories are very personal and tender.”
Carruth splits his year evenly living in Ohio and Portland, Ore. He comes back twice a year for signings, before Christmas and Mother’s Day.
“He works out here and when he’s out west; he never stops working,” Garden Smiles Manager Shannon Pieper said.
Deb said his work is in higher demand than ever.
“People love to collect Carruth sculptures and to give them as gifts for all occasions,” she said in a news release. “We’re pleased to introduce many new designs this year.”
One of the new designs includes a Nativity, which is especially in demand right now.
“I think what interests people the most is it’s happy. I think all of his pieces make you smile,” Pieper said. “His personality really shows through in all of his work.”
Garden Smiles, Carruth’s retail shop, is the only place to find the complete collection of his sculpted designs, totaling more than 250 pieces. Carruth has been creating images out of limestone and clay since 1983. He created his studio, Carruth Studio, the same year.
Garden Smiles is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, visit carruthstudio.com or call (419) 878-5412.
