Toledo’s starting pitchers had a weekend to forget as Furman finished off a three-game sweep with an 8-5 win on March 4.
Junior starter Jared Locke moved to 0-3 on the season after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings. UT’s starting pitchers combined for a 19.56 ERA on the weekend, allowing 20 runs in 9.2 innings.
With the loss, the Toledo (3-6) has lost four straight and six of its last seven games. Furman moved to 7-5 with the victory.
Just four Rockets recorded hits against the Paladins, led by senior right fielder Jeff Cola (2 for 4, R, RBI) and sophomore left fielder Jacob North (2 for 4). Senior second baseman Joe Corfman had one hit in five at bats, but crossed the plate three times.
After Furman broke open the game with three runs in the first, UT cut the lead to one in the fourth thanks to an RBI by Cola and an error. Furman responded immediately with four runs in the fifth to push the advantage to 7-2.
Junior Cody Umbright entered the game in relief and threw 3.2 innings, allowing one run. Toledo scored three in the ninth but couldn’t close the lead further.
The Rockets will look to regroup when they travel from Greenville to Charleston, S.C., to take on the College of Charleston (7-3) at 6 p.m. March 6.
