About 30 aspiring engineers got to try out the trade Wednesday at an annual event for National Engineers Week.

The SSOE Group, an engineer and architect firm, hosted the “Engineer for a Day” program to link high school students with SSOE professionals for a few hours. The Technical Society of Toledo coordinates Engineers Week and places high school students with engineering firms.

On Feb. 15, students attended from Bedford, Southview, Ida and Edison high schools and Toledo Islamic Academy.

The idea is to promote the profession, particularly after census data has revealed the first drop in science and engineering professionals since 1950, according to the news release.

Students started with a luncheon at the University of Toledo College of Engineering and then met at the SSOE building. Students received an overview of project management and participated in a team-building exercise involving Legos. They also learned how to cook hot dogs and pickles with a few wires and a battery.

The SSOE Group has a co-op/internship program that employs 40 college students at a given time. SSOE has operated for the last 60 years.
