Growing up, Emily Moody and Jennifer Daher always had cameras in their hands. For Moody, it was a hand-me-down camera from her mom and for Daher it was a camera given to her by her father. In 2006, Moody and Daher turned their hobby and passion into a career with the official opening of Jem photography.
Though Moody and Daher have known each other since junior high, the two hadn’t discussed going into business together until they were on a trip after graduating from college. During a two-week trip hiking the Grand Canyon, Moody and Daher found themselves taking pictures of everything they could imagine. It was in the Grand Canyon when the dialogue truly began.
“That’s when the dream started,” Moody said. “We started wondering, what if we could do this for a living?”
As the years passed, Moody and Daher continued taking pictures for family and friends. They soon realized opportunity was knocking.
“We were sort of growing a business without having a business,” Moody said. “And we loved the idea of working together and being able to do what we love every day.”
After initially opening their studio in the lower portion of a house in Maumee, the two moved to Lambertville for a couple of years before settling in downtown Sylvania. According to Daher, the business was growing and Sylvania was an ideal location.
“We started with shooting weddings and we intended to focus on that, but we had people come back from those weddings asking for pictures for other events,” Daher said. “From there our business spread through word of mouth as it continues to do today. We opened the Sylvania location and everyone has been so welcoming. It is a great community for a small business.”
The two women said there are countless reasons why their business is more than just a career.
“This job doesn’t feel like work at all,” Daher said. “It’s rewarding being able to see families grow and document all the different happy moments in people’s lives. We are pairing what we love to do with something awesome going on in your lives.”
While Jem has expanded its services and photographs a number of different events, weddings continue to remain a focus.
“[Daher] and I always talk about what’s important during the wedding,” Moody said. “It’s the special day you have dreamed of and we love the emotion that it brings. We love capturing the bride and groom living in that moment. We love the details in weddings and the different things that make your wedding unique and it’s a joy to be able to capture those emotions. We love to capture those things you look back on, those heirloom memories.”
Daher said the pair strives to keep the bride and groom stress-free about photos on their special day.
“We don’t want the bride to have any worry or concerns,” Daher said. “The couple chooses us for our style and skill and because of this they can rest easy knowing that we are capturing their day as it unfolds.”
