El Tipico to reopen Sept. 20 after remodelWritten by Brigitta Burks | News Editor | BBurks@toledofreepress.com
El Tipico, a Mexican restaurant on the South Side, will reopen Sept. 20 after an extensive remodeling that began in January.
“We closed in January to do a small remodel and it has turned into a very large remodel,” said owner Dina Villa Nostrant. Originally, Nostrant planned to just make the bathrooms compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, but went further with the addition of booths, a parking lot, revamped décor and the restoration of the vegetable garden.
Nostrant’s parents Consuelo and Ezekiel Villa started the restaurant after moving to Toledo from San Antonio in the ’60s. Much of the menu is still based on Consuelo’s cooking.
“We’re trying really hard to go and make sure we can stay with everything she believed in. … With her, it has to be clean, fresh and keep it simple,” Nostrant said of her late mother.
El Tipico will still serve customer favorites like enchiladas in addition to adding new items like fish tacos, shrimp, pork and Mexican-style hamburgers and chicken sandwiches, Nostrant said.
Nostrant, who was an interior designer for more than 15 years, incorporated her own touches into the new décor with warm hues, metallic accents in the foyer and several pieces from local artists, including glass lamps.
“I know [the word] bistro’s French, but it feels like a Mexican bistro,” Nostrant said.
El Tipico is located at 1444 South Ave., Toledo. Twenty percent of sales from the grand opening weekend Sept. 20-22 will benefit the CedarCreek Car Care Clinic for single moms and widows. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday. To make reservations for opening weekend, call (419) 382-0661.
