Toledo couple to appear on ‘House Hunters’Written by Danielle Stanton | | email@example.com
Young professionals Matt Rubin and Breanne Democko have taken the “You Will Do Better in Toledo,” slogan to new heights. The professionally and socially active Toledo couple are the subject of an HGTV “House Hunters” episode that shines a positive spotlight on the Glass City.
Soon after the couple got engaged, they started watching “House Hunters,” a show in which a realtor leads potential home buyers through three properties. At the time, they thought, “We could totally be on this show.” They submitted a video and were selected.
The couple said they wanted to showcase the wonderful qualities of Toledo as well as find a property they loved.
HGTV’s website gives a sneak peak into the segment that airs at 10 p.m. July 22.
“Matt and fiancée Bre are young professionals living in Downtown Toledo’s Warehouse District,” according to the website. “Tired of renting, they’ve decided it’s time to buy. Problem is, Matt wants to stay Downtown and buy an industrial style loft, while Bre wants a home outside the city with a great neighborhood and room for a future family. Who will win out?”
During a recent phone interview, the couple gave nothing away about the show. But they said they are still happily engaged to be married in August — despite taping the show during the polar vortex in December and January.
The couple, both of whom hail from outside the city — Rubin near Detroit and Democko from Youngstown – came to the University of Toledo where they earned their undergraduate and graduate degrees. They built a life and decided to stay.
“We’re not from here, our families aren’t from here, but we chose Toledo,” Democko said.
They picked the city from several other opportunities because they fell in love with it, they said. Rubin checked off several highlights of the city – the zoo, the parks, the low cost of living – that enticed them to find a home in Toledo.
They both know there’s blight in Toledo, but said they believe in accentuating the positive. While taping the “House Hunters” segment, they spoke about Toledo, mentioning the university, the Mud Hens expansion and businesses Downtown.
“There’s so many great resources –- it’s phenomenal,” Rubin said. “I think when people come to Toledo they’re surprised. That’s what kept us in town. … We feel we can fulfill our American dream here.”
Realtor Al Hotchkiss from Sulfur Springs Realty lead them through the house-buying process.
Democko, an attorney, said they had just gotten engaged and were planning the wedding when Rubin suggested they go on the show. She thought at the time that it would never happen.
“He really had to convince me to do it because I was really camera shy,” Democko said.
The taping, they said, couldn’t have come at a worse time. Not only had the polar vortex hit and they were planning their wedding, but Rubin was finishing his MBA at UT and had just started at Hart Associates.
There’s no doubt the couple are die-hard Toledo fans. They own a three-panel canvas wall hanging that says, “You Will Do Better in Toledo.”
“There’s no better (slogan) than “You Will Do Better in Toledo,” because it’s so true,” Democko said.
