Toledo breaks six-game losing skid

The Rockets toppled Coastal Carolina on the road 10-7 in 11 innings on March 9, snapping a six-game losing streak. Toledo had previously lost eight of its last nine, including a 10-4 loss to the Chanticleers two days earlier.

Toledo (4-8) scored a ninth-inning run after senior second baseman Joe Corfman drove home senior designated hitter Matt Delewski with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at seven and force extra innings.

Sophomore catcher James Miglin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the go-ahead run in the 11th and senior right fielder Jeff Cola singled to extend the lead to its final, 10-7.

Junior Michael Hamann got the start over Coastal Carolina (5-5) and threw five innings allowing five runs (four earned) with two strikeouts, giving way to junior Cody Umbright, who allowed two runs in two innings. Senior closer Matt Kuna (2-0) pitched the final four innings for the win, holding the Chanticleers scoreless while allowing just one hit.

Corfman led the Rockets going 2 for 4 with three runs and three RBI. Miglin (1 for 5, R, 4 RBI) drove in a game-high four runs while Cola (2 for 6, 2 RBI) brought home two.

Toledo will play its seventh consecutive game in South Carolina on March 10 when it faces in-state opponent Ohio State (7-4) in Myrtle Beach at 5 p.m.

UT’s losing slide continues against Coastal Carolina

The Toledo baseball team continued to struggle this season as it lost 10-4 to Coastal Carolina on March 7. The Rockets have now lost six straight games and eight of their last nine.

For the second consecutive game, Toledo (3-8) had just three hits. Senior first baseman Mark Lapikas highlighted the day with a grand slam in the third inning, putting UT ahead 4-2. Junior designated hitter Andy Mix and freshman shortstop Dan Zuchowski both recorded the final two hits.

In his first start of his career, freshman Andrew Marra allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in 2.1 innings. He gave way to freshman Alec Schmenk (0-1) who was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) in just 0.2 inning of work.

The Chanticleers (5-4) scored six in the third, responding to Lapikas’ grand slam to take an 8-4 lead and added two in the seventh.

Toledo will have one more chance against Coastal Carolina when the two teams match up at 4 p.m. March 9.
