Retirement Guys: The Frito BanditoWritten by Nolan Baker Mark Clair | | firstname.lastname@example.org
“Ay, ay, ay, ay! oh, I am dee Frito Bandito. I like Frito’s Corn Chips. I love them, I do. I want Frito’s corn chips. I’ll take them, from you.”
This song, along with many other odd things, remind me of the past. Things like:
Hot Wheels, Hot Pants, Fizzies (these tasted gross and gave me a headache), Pet Rocks, Mood Rings, Slinky, leisure suits, “Where’s the beef?”, the AMC Pacer, AMC Gremlin, 8 Track tapes, Lost in Space (Dr. Smith cracked me up—“the pain, oh the pain”), The Brady Bunch, land line phones, pay phones (have you noticed they have disappeared?) VCR’s, GoGo Boots, Love American Style, Beach Boys, bell bottoms, peace signs. From a local flavor, Centennial Hall, Toledo University, Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour, Lion Store.
These are a few of things that come to mind when I think of years past, my childhood, growing up, etc. Sometimes it’s fun to think back on some of the more amusing things of the past that may have stuck with us. Ever have just a random thought of something that makes absolutely no sense considering the context of the time or place that you are in? I (Mark) find myself when I am alone in the car, randomly blurting out things that if anyone heard me they would think I was losing it. The other day I was alone driving down the road yelling out, “Git er done!” over and over. I had a friend that every time I would see him would say “I love you, man!” He didn’t really love me, he just liked to repeat over and over the expression from the old Bud Light commercial. Personally, I cannot stop saying Wasuuuuuuuuppppppp!!!!!!!!, from the old Budweiser commercial. I remember that it started with, What’s up and deteriorated from there. Wassup, Wassssssuuuuppppp, Wahhhhhhhh, Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!.
Can you believe Christmas is upon us already? If you have read us in the past, you probably are aware of my sensitivity to the quick passage of time. I am conscious of this in my own life and also conscious of it because of The Retirement Guys working with folks entering the retirement phase of life. Because of this awareness of time, I believe in having as much fun as possible. Some of the things that I have been blessed and fortunate enough to so in the past few years are: Norwegian Fjords Cruise, Detroit Tigers Fantasy Camp, Spring Break in Florida, Alaskan Cruise, vacation to Mexico, riding around New Orleans on a Mardi Gras float, a party on board the USS Midway, vacation in Lake Tahoe, vacation in St. Thomas, getting put in a headlock by MMA fighter Diego Sanchez and yes, getting my picture taken with one of The Real Housewives of Orange County (Vicki Gunvalson). I could go on and don’t mean to boast. What I mean to do is point out one of the beliefs of The Retirement Guys. That is, life is short, and it is meant to be enjoyed. Yes we have to work. Yes we have to take care of our responsibilities. No we can’t just constantly goof off and live it up. But, what we can do is pick our spots and have fun.
During this holiday season, make sure you enjoy yourself. Stop and look at the Christmas lights and really appreciate it. Drink that eggnog and eat those Christmas cookies with extra enjoyment. Savor it. Savor the time you get to spend with people that you love. You will be glad you did. And believe it or not, I think instead of feeling like you are goofing off and wasting time, you will feel a sense of accomplishment that you spent your time doing something very important. Partaking of what life has to give. A Merry Christmas to you from The Retirement Guys. Nolan and I wish you the best and pray that you and your families will be blessed. Don’t forget to have fun.
