The Gold Knight: 2014 Oscars set for March 2Written by James A. Molnar | The Gold Knight | email@example.com
Mark your calendars, Oscar fans: the date for the 86th Academy Awards has been set — Sunday, March 2, 2014.
The motion picture academy also went ahead and reserved Sunday, Feb. 22, for the 87th Academy Awards.
Because of a calendar gridlock, Sundays in February were not available to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which puts on the Oscars. Every four years the Winter Olympics takes up three Sundays and the first Sunday is typically reserved for the Super Bowl. In 2014, the winter games from Sochi, Russia, are Friday, Feb. 7, to Sunday, Feb. 23. The big football game, numbered XLVIII, is Sunday, Feb. 2.
That left the Academy to choose a Sunday in January or March 2.In 2006 and 2010, the Academy and ABC scheduled the Oscars around the winter games by pushing the show into March. (The Academy permanently moved up the Oscars from a March slot to February beginning with the 76th Academy Awards in 2004.)
The Academy could have moved the ceremony from a Sunday night, but that seemed unlikely. The most recent Oscars ceremony on a Monday was the 70th Academy Awards on March 23, 1998. And ABC would not want to counter program against the Olympics or football, typically ratings juggernauts.

Other awards shows
The Oscars isn’t the only show affected by an Olympics year.
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards has been set for Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, the earliest it has taken place. Since 2006, the SAG Awards has occurred on the last Sunday of January — except 2010 when the event took place on Saturday, Jan. 23. Organizers said NFL and Olympic scheduling were the reason for the Saturday ceremony.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has not yet announced its date for the 2014 Golden Globes. Typically, the Globes takes place before the SAG Awards. This year, the show was on Jan. 13. If NBC has an NFL divisional playoff game to air, the Globes could be pushed to Jan. 5.
The Recording Academy will also have a tough task finding a Sunday spot for its Grammy Awards. This year’s ceremony was on Feb. 10. The 2010 ceremony took place on Jan. 31 and the 2006 ceremony was on Feb. 8, the Sunday before the Olympics opened.
The Producers Guild of America announced that it moved its PGA Awards to Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014.
