Recount: Sykes edges Martinez for City Council seatWritten by Bailey G. Dick | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Larry Sykes has edged out incumbent Adam Martinez in the race for the final spot on Toledo City Council, but that doesn’t mean the contest between the two is over.
The Lucas County Board of Elections determined Nov. 25 that Sykes bested Martinez by five votes after a count of provisional ballots from the election earlier this month.
According to Board of Elections policy, there will be a recount because Sykes won by less than one half of a percent. The board will randomly select three or four precincts to recount on Dec. 5.
On Nov. 25, Martinez said his campaign has advisers and an attorney on standby to work with him throughout the recount process.
Martinez said that while he is still hoping for a victory, he doesn’t expect a great change in the outcome of the election.
“Maybe I’m a little naïve, but if they did it right the first time, the numbers should be accurate. But human errors do happen,” Martinez said. “I have no regrets. I didn’t work hard enough and I have no one else to blame but myself.”
Theresa Gabriel, whose spot on Council was also up in the air, was solidified by the Board today.
