Retirement Guys: Hello new shoes, bye-bye bluesWritten by Nolan Baker Mark Clair | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Do you know the feeling you get when you put on a pair of new shoes? Paolo Nutini in his song “New Shoes” says, “Hey, I put some new shoes on and suddenly everything is right.” When you get those new shoes, you feel good, you feel fresh and you have a spring in your step. Nutini’s song goes on to say, “Hello new shoes, bye-bye blues.” So, if you want to feel good, go get yourself some new shoes. If you want, you can make them Silver Sneakers. Read on and you can find out how.
If you have been reading our recent columns you will recall that I (Mark) recently made a decision to get in shape to make a comeback on the softball field. I had to go get some new shoes to be able to work out and do my cardio each day. Man, those new shoes feel good. They feel light on my feet, making me feel like I can run and jump like I am a kid again. I have realized that my body will not function like it did in my heyday and I have experienced various aches and pains during the process of getting in shape, but I can say that I am way less “fluffy” than I used to be. (Fluffy is what my wife called me instead of fat in order to not make me feel so bad.) At my last measurement I had lost 25 pounds of fat and gained 10 pounds of muscle.
What’s the point, here? Do some things to make yourself feel good. Part of The Retirement Guys philosophy is to live life to the full. Don’t wait to go have fun. Feeling good means both mentally and physically. There is a great way that we have just discovered that many retirees may have available to them to get in better shape physically. It is call SilverSneakers. What is SilverSneakers? It is an energizing program that encourages older adults to engage in physical activity in a fun way through social events and classes. More than 40 Medicare health plans offer it and the program offers such benefits as basic fitness memberships at participating fitness locations, health education workshops and seminars, online tracking of your fitness progress and various health classes. Some of the classes include weight training, cardio, yoga and water aerobics. There is also advice on nutrition, exercise and life skills available online. We would suggest that you check to see if your health plan offers SilverSneakers. If it does, there may be all kinds of benefits that you have access to that you are not aware of. You could have free access to a fitness club. Who doesn’t like free, right?
The important thing is to take control of your situation and take some steps to make yourself feel better. I know it is hard to get motivated. It took me years to muster up the energy to get to the gym on a regular basis, but I am so glad I did. I feel great and can function reasonably well on the athletic field. You don’t have to play a sport to have a reason to get in shape. Statistics show that older adults that participate in moderate physical activity have a longer life expectancy. Being physically active can reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. I can tell you from personal experience, you will feel better in both mind and body. You will feel better physically and you will feel a sense of accomplishment that you are doing something good. It makes it that much sweeter when you go on vacation and are enjoying fun and good food. There is much less guilt involved since you know you have been working to improve yourself.
