White lion dies at Toledo Zoo after surgeryWritten by Staff Reports | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Wisdom, one of three white lions at the Toledo Zoo, died July 18 following surgery, the zoo reported July 19.
The surgery — to treat a deteriorating spinal condition that would have led to paralysis — was successful, but the lion did not awaken from the anesthesia, according to a news release from the zoo.
“Wisdom had a history of back issues, which our veterinary team successfully managed with therapeutic steroidal treatments,” said Randi Meyerson, the zoo’s assistant director of animal program, in the release. “However, recently his symptoms began to worsen. Without corrective surgery, the condition would have eventually paralyzed him.”
Wisdom was born at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2001 and came to the Toledo Zoo in 2003 on long-term loan from Siegfried & Roy. He lived in the Tembo Trail exhibit with his brothers, Courage and Legend.
