Retirement Guys: Do it rightWritten by Nolan Baker Mark Clair | | email@example.com
If you read The Retirement Guys’ column regularly, you may recall reading a column entitled “I’m Not Fat, I’m Fluffy” (my wife tells me this to make me feel better about my girth). I (Mark) had written about how a guy came up to me at one of our public workshops and invited me to play in a fifty and older softball league. I have played some serious softball in my day, but the idea was scary because over the years I have become further and further out of shape (almost to the point of no return). I loved the idea of playing again, but frankly, I was scared. Scared that I could not physically do it. But I thought to myself, it is now or never. If you don’t do this now, you never will.
So, I went back to The Retirement Guys’ formula for success: INSPIRATION + KNOWLEDGE + ACTION = SUCCESS. I personally have always loved sports and am inspired by elements like playing hard, persevering, teamwork, caring about others on your team, practice, hard work, etc. I cold not believe the Heat vs. Spurs basketball game when Miami was down by five points with 28 seconds left and still managed to win the game. They persevered and never gave up. Applying the formula to my situation, I was inspired by the invitation and my love for the game to “make a comeback” and play softball. Knowledge gained from much experience playing in my past told me what I would need to be able to do physically to be successful. I was way too out of shape to do this, so I needed to exercise the most important part of the formula: take action!
I asked myself, “How can I get this done?” If I would have been left to my own devices, I knew I would not find enough motivation. How about hiring a personal trainer? That is exactly what I did. I met with Marco Iagulli of Powerline Fitness and began my quest for a body that could actually function on the softball field. Marco is big on educating his clients and informed me that there is a right way to get fit. Some of the things I have learned are: 1.) You should have your heart rate in a certain range to burn fat. If the range is too high, you may be burning muscle. 2.) Doing exercises in a proper position will give you maximum benefit (Marco explained the idea of differing results based upon where you are positioned in relation to “the fulcrum”). 3.) You must manage your nutrition to get a proper balance of protein, carbohydrates and calories. The big point here is that there is a proper combination of different critical elements to achieve the best results.
We here at The Retirement Guys are big on the idea of 1+1+1=3. It seems that many successful formulas contain three critical elements. With Marco, it is proper technique and consistency with cardiovascular exercise, proper technique with weight training and proper balance of nutrition. With The Retirement Guys, the thinking starts with Inspiration + Knowledge + Action and leads to the application of the proper way of Managing Your Money + Protecting Your Assets + Efficiently Planning Your Estate.
After gaining years of experience, we feel we have figured out the right way to plan for retirement. So many times, folks bring in their statements and we look at their investments and see that there is no concrete plan behind how things have been positioned and they don’t even know why they have what they have. Money has been thrown into investments that perhaps have done well in the past with the hope that success will continue. Like Marco, we want to make sure that the proper techniques are being exercised and there is an overall plan that makes sense. We want to have a purpose for every account, take into consideration timeframes, risk tolerance, need for income, liquidity, etc. Unless it all fits together, it can turn out to be a big mess. We want people to “do it the right way.”
As for me, I am no longer as fluffy. With the help of Marco and my trainer Matt Soboda, I have lost 19 pounds of fat and gained 12 pounds of muscle. I’m still a little fluffy, but I feel like a lean, mean, fighting machine. On the softball field, I am still trying to get to the point that I don’t feel like I am running in quicksand, but I am playing well and our Frickers #3 team is 4-1. It has been a total blast so far, and I am so glad that I took the time to “do things right” to get me to my goal. You can do it right, too, with your retirement planning. 1+1+1=3!
