Retirement Guys: Don’t retire — you have a giftWritten by Nolan Baker Mark Clair | | email@example.com
Did you know that you have a special gift that nobody else has? You do! We were each created so uniquely that there is no one else like us. You are one of a kind. You have talents and skills that I (Mark) don’t have. And boy do I appreciate you.
Many that know me know that I am not very mechanical. Whenever it comes to fixing something, I call in the experts to make sure it is done right. I figure it will be done correctly and in my case, about a third of the time. I once installed a garbage disposal in our kitchen all by myself! I was really proud of this. Pretty sad, huh? Oh, but I had a new appreciation of plumbing skills when I struggled greatly to keep the pipes from leaking. Very frustrating. My friend Jim recently offered to help me put some new parts on my motorcycle and I told him that I am very good at standing there and handing over the next tool that is needed in the process. I got good at that as a kid handing tools to my dad. It’s interesting how each one of us is made differently with a different set of skills. My grandpa could fix anything. My dad could fix some things and I can fix about nothing. Go figure.
What’s it all about, Alfie? Remember the old Burt Bacharach song? When I am confused about something for some reason I always say to myself, “What’s it all about, Alfie?” I don’t know why. It just comes to mind. What is it all about, really? What is life about? Many think it is about growing up, getting a job, raising a family, saving your money, retiring and then eventually dying. These are very noble pursuits (except the dying part) and are part of the typical process of life. But is there more? Many would think so.
We are studying “What On Earth Am I Here For?” (also known as The Purpose Driven Life) by Rick Warren at our church. I am really getting a lot out of it just like I did when I read the book a few years ago. It really puts things in perspective and is a real source of encouragement for me. Sometimes we all can get discouraged and depressed and it is a real emotional lift to realize that we were all created for a purpose to use the special talents and skills we were given. I was struck deeply the other day by a Bible verse in the study that says “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10. What struck me about this was not only that we were created uniquely to use our talents, but also, that God has prepared works in advance for us to do. That tells me that I have a specific purpose. Wow. That’s heavy-duty stuff.
Do you know what is scary for The Retirement Guys? The word retirement is not even in the Bible. Sounds like to me we might be out of business soon. Well, maybe not. We still need to plan, invest and save money wisely and plan for the future. It is called being a good steward and we think there is a great need for the kind of work that we do. I would like to think we can help get you to the point quicker when you can “retire” from your regular job and get to what your greater purpose may be. You don’t have to wait until then, though. Get busy with your purpose now.
How do we find out what our purpose is? I think that one of the reasons we were created is to serve. So the thing to do is to examine your skills and talents and figure out how best to use them to serve others. I can speak from experience that self-esteem is the highest when you are serving. There are many organizations that are just dying for help. The ultimate “retirement” is to never retire. Stay engaged. Find a cause that you are passionate about and get in there and help out. Trust me. You will be glad you did.
