Rathbun: This might be my last columnWritten by Gary Rathbun | | GaryRathbun@PrivateWealthConsultants.com
According to some 2012ologists, the world is going to end Dec. 21 when the winter solstice, occurs at 4:12 a.m. Mountain Time. Other 2012ologists say that the sun will cause a magnetic phenomenon that will cause the pineal glands of all humans to release a hallucinogen causing a mass humanity wide acid trip. (Far out, man.)
Others believe that solar flares will create havoc and that extraterrestrials will land and evacuate the chosen few to a safe and better place. (Doubtful that I will be one of the chosen ones.)
Maybe this is why Congress is procrastinating so long on the fiscal cliff talks. Why bother striking a bad deal, politically, if the world is going to end? Besides, I am sure those in Washington, D.C., believe that they are part of the chosen ones that will taken to a better place.
Either way, I am planning on making it to Christmas, at least, and probably into next year. That being said, we need to look at next year with a renewed vision and energy. It is an old statement, but still very relevant today: government is the problem, not the solution.
In a new book I picked up by Robert Greene titled “Mastery,” the author talks about what it is going to take going to succeed and master the future. He states, “We must learn to develop ourselves. At the same time, it is a world teeming with critical problems and opportunities, best solved and seized by entrepreneurs — individuals or small groups who think independently, adapt quickly and possess unique perspectives. Your individualized, creative skills will be at a premium.”
This summarizes very clearly what this country needs and what we must do as individuals to succeed. This is my vision and I will do everything in my power to find the opportunities and also find the entrepreneurs that are positioning themselves to solve the problems we currently face.
The solution to our issues is ourselves. The Greek poet Pindar wrote, “Become who you are by learning who you are.” We are Americans and it is important to remember and realize the meaning of being American. We persevere, overcome and adapt to the circumstances we find ourselves in, both historically and today.
Each of us has the ability to be an entrepreneur and find a creative solution to any particular problem or need today. We have all of the tools that we need between our ears. We were born with the ultimate Christmas present. All we have to do is unwrap it and learn how to master its use.
Going into the Christmas season, I tend to think of redemption and renewal of my vision for the future. I am optimistic for the future of our country because we are Americans and we have been through tough times before. Next year may be a difficult year with several ups and downs, but if the entrepreneurial skills, which we all have, are developed and employed then we will be fine.
Next year will present us with lots of opportunities to creatively solve problems. Solving these problems will allow the entrepreneur to prosper. The solution will be more effective and efficient than anything the government can or will develop.
I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year’s.
