BBB offers scam alert text messages

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Northwestern Ohio and Southeastern Michigan is now offering scam alerts via text message.

People can sign up for the free service by texting the word “SCAM” to (419) 469-1383.

“If we need to send out an alert about a fraudulent business, bogus solicitor or dangerous email, texting is the fastest way to get that information to our members and the public,” said BBB Texting Specialist Tene Jackson, in a news release.

The BBB started offering the text alerts about six weeks ago, said Marilyn Levine, director of the BBB Foundation.

“We’ve gotten some response to it, but not overwhelming,” Levine said. “We need to do some more promotion of it.”

Signing up takes a few seconds, no personal information is needed and phone numbers are kept confidential, according to the release.

For more information, call the BBB at (800) 743-4222 or visit toledo.bbb.org.
