“Death by China” Movie Director Hosts Town Hall Meeting at Toledo ScreeningWritten by Julia Torres | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Movie director, Peter Navarro surprised movie-goers in Toledo on Saturday, September 29th when he greeted viewers as they filed in to see his movie, the new documentary “Death by China” as part of his Ohio tour dates. With approximately 40 people in the audience, Navarro greeted people as they arrived and personally introduced his film that presents an in-depth analysis of U.S.-China trade relations. Painting a bleak and cautionary picture of China’s unfair trade practices, slave-like labor laws and lack of environmental regulations, the non-partisan movie provides a “weapons of job destruction” tutorial on America’s current $3 trillion dollar debt “to the world’s largest communist nation” and our inability to compete on a level playing field. The film also reminds us of major recalls of products made in China – like the drug, Heparin, baby formula and pet food – that have resulted in death or injury here in the United States.
Co-author (with Gary Autry) of the book by the same name, and aware of Mayor Mike Bell’s recent hosting of investors from China, Navarro commented that “the strategy of courting China’s business investors with open arms and not recognizing the dangers is naïve. First, it was CEOs selling out their country. Now, we have cash-strapped politicians succumbing to the same temptations.” Having visited eight other cities in Ohio before his stop in Toledo, Navarro described downtown Toledo as appearing like the “Ground Zero of (American) Manufacturing.”
Earning his PhD. from Harvard University, Dr. Navarro has been a professor for more than 20 years, served three years in the Peace Corps and was inspired to create this documentary after seeing films like “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Inside Job.” He will be here in Toledo, introducing his film at RAVE Franklin Park Mall Cinemas through Thursday, October 4th and says he’ll spend the next year hosting “town hall meetings” related to his movie all around the country.
