Fred --

20,000 races online? By my math, if each race takes about 4 minutes or so, that amounts to nearly two months of gaming, non-stop. And that doesn't even count sleep, eating, or bathroom breaks. If true, that is a level of dedication that I could never even touch. And if it's true, I'd believe your Wii is hardly ever off. :)

And I never said that all players are "pixel counters" or that gameplay doesn't matter -- of course it does. Problem is, as I said, that the games that were the biggest hits on Wii were actually ones with poor play. Mario Kart Wii was probably the highest quality game among its double-digit sellers, and even that wasn't as good as the Mario Kart GameCube iteration, in my opinion.

Thanks!

Fairly biased article IMHO. The Wii in our household is heavily used and hardly ever off. I have had around 20k races online for Wii Kart. My son is addicted as well! How many thousands of hours have we battled online! We still do. He has a DS, as do all his mates. They're all hooked on Nintendo franchise characters. Once he goes to bed I will play Call of Duty, Monster Hunter or one of the Resident Evils. I hate the way some people assume we are all pixel-counters. When will bloggers realise most of us value gameplay?

Holy cow, tons of discussion on this one, awesome! If you don't mind me asking, where'd you all come from? Who linked the column?

Rob -- Hey hey hey, I'm the only "fat ass" among the friends I mention. :) I was using my friends as a jumping off point to discuss how casual gamers seem to have bought the system, a few big titles (one I didn't mention: Mario Kart) and that was it. I'm sure there are hardcore gamers like yourself who still play the system all the time. But, no offense, you weren't who Nintendo wanted to rope in. They were aiming squarely at a new audience. They succeeded in garnering that audience, but that audience, I feel, didn't benefit the system in the long run.

Nick -- Dreamcast! Awesomely old school, man! :)

Truth - The perspective of international players is indeed valuable and under-represented in my column, though I can't help but feel that the name-calling kinda undermines your point. I'm not even an "ex-box" player -- I own a Wii and PS3, myself. As for third parties "abandoning" the Wii, I dunno, I've seen a ton of the major third parties continue to put out titles for the system -- but games that feel like weaker ports of console and PC titles, all designed to be more shallow titles that appeal to the "motion control" gimmick. If that's an example of them "abandoning" the system, you have a point. But I think it's more an example of developers following where the money went.

Dr. Corndog - I didn't say that the N64 was less powerful than the Playstation, or that the GameCube was less powerful than the PS2. What I said was that Nintendo made some questionable hardware choices (cartridges?) and that every Nintendo console seemed to lag behind its competitors in terms of graphics. The Nintendo consoles may have been more powerful, but on a game-by-game basis its visuals sure didn't seem to be far ahead to the average consumer.

Raindog469 - Nice! I was one of many who hoped that the Wii's success would lead more people to gaming. Sadly it felt like many gamers weren't won over past the Wii's initial success, which is what inspired this column.

Eric - An excellent point comparing the two consoles' top tier gaming sales. I wasn't trying to claim that Mario and Zelda sold poorly, just how ridiculously huge the gap was between the poor non-games which sold so incredibly well and the quality titles. You're right that the Wii did have plenty of games which sold very well. But the transcendent hits, the ones which came to define the system for many, were not great quality titles, really, which seemed to lead developers away from that kind of product. That was what I was trying to convey with that stat. And nowadays, the Wii's games are rather anemic on the charts -- admittedly in the end of its life cycle, but most other consoles in history continued to sell games right up to the end.

Great discussion, everyone!

I understand the author's point but think its a little biased. "360 and PS3 games continue to appear high on sales charts, while the Wii’s titles typically can barely muster the ability to crack the top 10"

By the numbers the top selling PS3 games are:
Gran Turismo 5 (7.43 million)[131]
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (5.34 million)[131]
God of War III (5.2 million)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#PlayStation_3

So when the author implies Mario Galaxy and Zelda sold poorly (9 and 6 million), its actually more than the best selling PS3 games. Its just software sales for Wii are insane.

Hey, I'm only about 28 hours into Xenoblade. Haven't even really looked at Last Story yet. I'm probably gonna be just about finishing up Xenoblade up when the Wii U comes out (and man, I hope they do a nice HD sequel because I'm enjoying it a lot more than the Mario and Zelda entries on the Wii).

My girl is more of an Xbox 360 fan, but before the Wii she was all keyboard-and-mouse, all the way. So the Wii was a gateway device in more ways than one.

It's kind of a shame the way the casual explosion on the Wii has overshadowed the number of traditional gamers who play the console regularly. In fact, the Wii is my only current-gen console. I had an XBox 360, but found the games to lack the kind of charm that games of the 80's and 90's had, and that Nintendo games frequently still do.

Also, it seems that Nintendo's recent strategy of releasing less powerful consoles has clouded people's memory with regard to their earlier systems. This isn't the first time I've read someone claiming the N64 was less powerful than the Playstation (it wasn't), or that the Gamecube was third in processing power (it was more powerful than the PS2).

Here is what is wrong with this article, it has no basis in history. Third parties abandoned the Wii, the luclustre third parties that is for an easy out. Am talking about the FPS making third parties namely the idiots that make the casual COD. intelligent minds at Capcom, EA ( SMH ) even Ubisoft stuck with the Wii and made some of the best games this generation. Monster hunter tri, FIFA and red steel 2.

Truth is the Wii was used and is still used and played by millions around the world. It's only this case were for the first time the minority are wrong. The buy only America minority nerds geeks that cannot stand their precious RROD machine from being hammered like the Wii did to the exbox. Sony I understand their fans are hurt cause their reign had to be handed back to the original king Nintendo.

Adding on to Johhny Z, is also The Last Story, and Super Smash Bros. The Wii is by far my favorite system. I do own the 3DS, the Vita, PS3, Xbox360, and most consoles since the 5th gen. By so far Nintendo seems to know what people want. Fun. Fun games, that are always there to bring you some joy. I've clocked in so many months on the Wii. I'm willing to bet that the Wii U, will be my most used system by far. Even surpassing the Dreamcast.

I thought this was just another wii article, console news are becoming repetitive and stagnet, but I still check all the tech news. But what got me was at the end where it says, 'nintendo shouldn't forget the their fans'. I think that they have, completly forgotton fans. I have settled and realize nintendo will not change and maybe Ive out grown them.

Thanks for the comment and compliment. Indeed, the Wii was an impressive piece of hardware, really, and did have more than a few top shelf games. It's just that they were overrun and ignored in the marketplace, by and large. I really hope Nintendo can recapture the passion they instilled in their fanbase while not succumbing to the easy buck this time around.

I really hate this kind of articles where they say things like they were facts, how do you know that people don´t use it anymore? how do you know that other consoles have more playtime? just because you see a couple of your fat-ass friends with a wii sitting there unused that doesn´t mean the same happens with everyone. the only reason my wii is dusty is because i rarely clean my stuff :)(that includes tv´s, pc, etc.) but i play it heavily, i have like 25 games and i´m still looking forward for some, it´s probably the console i´ve played the most so this articles are really stupid and are biased in some level

Really nice article. I think it should be mentioned, though, that the Wii actually does have a decent number of cool games, even if they were indeed largely ignored by consumers. Donkey Kong Country Returns, Xenoblade Chronicles, No More Heroes, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Epic Mickey, Monster Hunter Tri, and Mad World - in addition to the Mario Galaxy and Zelda games - are each fine games. Also, Nintendo did well with the VC, making the system - for those who chose to use the service - a veritable all-in-one Nintendo powerhouse. The machine was undeniably underpowered and featured a glut of shovelware in place of actual interesting games, but gamers didn't give it as much a chance, perhaps, as it may have deserved.
