Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (Ubisoft)

“There is nothing fair, honorable, or just about combat. There is only winning and losing—the dead and the living. … Future technology is the key to winning an asymmetric battle.”

This long-standing game series continues with a stealthy installment on the PlayStation 3 (with PlayStation Move capabilities) with special optical camouflage, augmented realty, drone control, and a huge weapons customizer. The story centers on an elite military squad investigating coups, rescuing assets, and breaking up weapons deals. The stakes are high and each player move must be deliberate with full strategy. The automatic cover system helps against a formidable AI system. The four-man squad AI works well along with sync shots where all allies concentrate on a marked target. Slow motion shots, destructible objects, and shattering sounds and impact enhance the entertainment.

The third person action includes single player modes along with co-op, multiplayer, and online modes. Learn tactical strategies first before tackling the challenging guerilla mode where players conquer wave upon wave of baddies in single player, cooperative or competitive setups. Players can wield over 50 weapons and shape them in the in-depth gunsmith mode – a great addition, especially for military action game experts. Occasional bugs can frustrate and developers should have included an offline split screen multiplayer mode.

Highly recommended (***1/2) and rated M for blood, intense violence, and strong language. Also available on Xbox 360 (with Kinect capabilities) and now on PC. Lucky players who grabbed the discounted Best Buy bundle of this game with special GUNNAR Optiks gaming eyewear can enjoy this game with reduced eyestrain and enhanced visuals though they can always be purchased separately. Special note: A one-time code is used for full-access online play, so used copies of the game will not have full access to online play.
