After a successful year nearly across the board in Toledo athletics, UT athletic director Mike O’Brien was named the Under Armour Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year for 2011-12.

“I am truly humbled by this honor, as I acknowledge that something like this happens due to the efforts of a terrific staff, coaches and student-athletes,” O’Brien said. “I see this as less of an individual honor for me, but rather a recognition of the accomplishments of our entire athletics program at UT.”

In O’Brien’s 11th season, the Rockets’ success was highlighted by Mid-American Conference championships by three women’s teams: cross country, soccer and swimming. The UT football team won its first bowl game in five years with a 42-41 victory over Air Force in the Military Bowl, the women’s basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight of the WNIT and captured the MAC West co-championship and the baseball team won its first MAC West championship.

Also under O’Brien’s watch in 2012, Toledo earned the Jacoby Trophy, given to the top women’s athletic program in the conference. The school’s student-athletes also recorded a record grade point average of 3.266 in the spring semester, breaking the record set the previous semester of 3.167.

Oh, good, because what UT really needs is a competent athletic director. When is El Gordo going to win University President of the Year?
