Rockets win 6-2 at Michigan
Written by Zach Davis | | zdavis@toledofreepress.comFor the second straight season, Toledo has left Ann Arbor with a victory.
The Rockets upset the University of Michigan 6-2 on April 11 for their third straight victory. Toledo had previously lost six consecutive games before their winning streak. UT won 3-1 last year over the Wolverines.
Alex Schmenk continued his stellar freshman campaign by picking up his first victory of the season for the Rockets (15-18). In the first three starts of his career, Schmenk (1-1, 3.38 ERA) has given up less than two runs in each of his outings. The 20-year-old from Perrysburg allowed just five hits and one run against the Wolverines (15-19) in five innings.
Freshman Andrew Marra, junior Cody Umbright and senior Alex Radon combined to throw four innings of one-run baseball in relief to close out the game.
Leading the UT offense was senior first baseman Mark Lapikas, who went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Senior right fielder Jeff Cola (2 for 4), sophomore catcher James Miglin (2 for 4, RBI) and freshman shortstop Dan Zuchowski (2 for 3, R) also recorded multihit games.
The Rockets scored four runs in the third inning to break open the game. Michigan chipped away with two runs to cut the lead to 4-2 but Toledo added on two in the ninth to shut the door on UM.
After playing 27 of their first 33 games on the road this season, UT will play at home in Scott Park in 11 of its next 15 games. The Rockets host Western Michigan (15-15, 5-3 Mid-American Conference) in a three-game series this weekend, with the first game against the Broncos kicking off at 3 p.m. April 13.
