Rockets avoid sweep at CMU
Written by Zach Davis | | zdavis@toledofreepress.comThe Rockets narrowly escaped Mount Pleasant with a 10-9 victory on April 8 over Central Michigan. The win helped UT avoid a sweep and break a six-game losing streak.
Toledo (13-18, 4-5 Mid-American Conference) recorded 15 hits against the Chippewas, its second-highest total of the season. The Rockets had nine combined hits the last two games.
At the plate, five different Rockets drove in two runs against CMU. Senior second baseman Joe Corfman (3 for 6, R, 2 RBI) and right fielder Jeff Cola (3 for 5, 2 RBI) each recorded three hits. Junior designated hitter Wes White (2 for 5, R, 2 RBI) hit his first home run of the season while sophomore catcher James Miglin (2 for 4, R, 2 RBI) also recorded a multihit effort.
For the third straight start, junior pitcher Michael Hamann (0-4, 7.88 ERA) allowed more than six runs, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work. He also walked a season-high six batters. Hamann has now allowed more than four runs in six of his eight starts this season after not allowing four runs in all nine starts last season before suffering a season-ending arm injury.
Senior Lincoln Rassi (1-0, 2.51 ERA) earned the win after stifling the Chippewa hitters, giving up just one hit in 4.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Toledo has a pair of midweek games as it hosts Dayton (15-18) at 3 p.m. April 10 before traveling to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan (15-17) at 6 p.m. April 11.
