Toledo lost its sixth straight game on April 7 in a 7-3 loss in Mount Pleasant to Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan.
The Rockets (12-18, 3-5 MAC) received a solid start from senior Matt Kuna (3-1, 3.27 ERA) but could not hold off the Chippewas (14-17, 5-3) who tagged him with his first loss of the season. Kuna threw six innings of three-run baseball (two earned) while striking out five.
Trailing 3-1 entering the seventh inning, UT’s relievers couldn’t hold down the Chippewas offense. Central Michigan scored two in each of the final two innings off of Tyler Scott and Andrew Marra to run away with a 7-3 victory.
After collecting just four hits in the series opener, Toledo didn’t do much better on its second attempt at the CMU pitching staff. The Rockets had just five hits in the game, led by senior second baseman Joe Corfman’s 2-for-3 effort.
Senior center fielder Ben Hammer and designated hitter Matt Delewski each went 1 for 4 with Delewski crossing the plate once. Freshman shortstop Dan Zuchowski (1 for 2, R, RBI) was the lone Rocket to drive home a run.
Toledo will look to avoid both a sweep and extending its losing streak to seven games when it wraps up its weekend series at 1 p.m. April 8 against Central Michigan. Junior starter Mike Hamann (0-4, 7.13 ERA) will take the hill looking for his first win of the season.
