Altvater: Tseng is ready for LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco Championship
Written by Fred Altvater | | BackNine@toledofreepress.comWhile most of the golf world was watching Tiger Woods win at Bay Hill, Yani Tseng won the LPGA Kia Classic by six shots at the La Costa Resort & Spa in southern California. It was Tseng’s 15th career win and third win in five starts in 2012.
Tseng won seven times, including two majors, and had 14 top 10s in 22 events in 2011 on the LPGA Tour. She also led the LPGA in seven of 13 performance categories last year.
At 23, Yani already has five major titles and is just four regular tour wins or two majors away from meeting the requirement for entry into the LPGA Hall of Fame. No one else is even close to her right now.
She has finished first or been in the top 10 in 19 of her last 27 tournaments. She is collecting wins and top 10s at a 70 percent clip. Not even Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus or Annika Sorenstam dreamed of dominating in the manner that Tseng has accomplished over the past two years.
This Kraft Nabisco Championship is the first LPGA major of year. Yani will be eyeing her sixth major title, her fifth in the last nine majors.
Her five major wins thus far in her short career makes her the first player, man or woman, to win five majors before the age of 23.
Yani was the runner-up in the 2011 Kraft Nabisco to Stacy Lewis. It was one of the few titles that escaped her grasp last year.
The high level at which Tseng is performing makes it hard to imagine someone being able to best her this week.
Look for Yani to pick up her sixth major title and get one step closer to the LPGA Hall of Fame.
