Film/video students host Oscar-type event at UT

University of Toledo film/video students will showcase their work March 24 in their own version of the Oscars.

“We’ve invested a lot of time in this event so it’d be great to have the people come out,” said Katie Martin, president of the Film/Video Student Showcase Committee and UT Film and Video Society. The annual event is different this year because of increased student involvement, she added.

Twenty works that vary in subject and length will be shown at the two-hour event. An after-party with appetizers and drinks gives audience members a chance to talk to the filmmakers.

“This definitely displays what we’re up to and what we’re about,” Martin said of the Student Showcase. A jury made up of faculty and staff selected the works shown at the event.

Martin, a senior, has two films being showcased. The first is a self-portrait and “it’s personal, but cool to share that with others,” Martin said. The second is an optical-printing piece, which involves special effects like superimposed images, stop motion and clay motion.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Martin said of her second film.

The films are the efforts of a semester or two’s worth of work, she added. “It takes hours upon hours to get the finished product and even then, you might not be finished” due to changes resulting from viewers’ reactions, Martin said of the film process.

Martin also recommended putting on your Sunday best for the showcase. “It’s best to dress up because we consider it our Oscar night,” Martin said with a laugh.

Admission is $3 for students and seniors and $5 for all others. The Film/Video Student Showcase starts at 7:30 p.m. March 24 at the UT Center for Performing Arts. The after-party is at the Production Lab (PA1039) and is free to attendees of the showcase.
