Toledo to defend WNIT Championship, face Detroit in opening roundWritten by Zach Davis | | email@example.com
Falling short of an NCAA Tournament bid, the UT women’s basketball team received an invitation to defend its Women’s National Invitational Tournament Championship from last season. The Rockets will face Detroit in the opening round on March 16 at Savage Arena.
In 2011, Toledo became the first Mid-American Conference team to capture a postseason tournament title after winning six-straight games in their home arena, including a 76-68 win over USC in the WNIT Championship.
The Rockets (21-9) will return to the 64-team tournament for the third straight season after being eliminated by Eastern Michigan in the MAC Tournament, despite holding a 10-point lead with seven minutes remaining. They are one of four MAC teams to receive an invite, including Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Miami (OH).
Detroit finished in second place in the Horizon League with a 20-13 record, including a 14-4 mark in the conference. The Titans have won 11 of their last 13 games, including a loss in the tournament championship game to No. 10 Wisconsin-Green Bay. They are led by Shareta Brown, who leads the team with 17.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest.
Tickets for the opening round of the WNIT are $11 and $13. They go on sale to season ticket holders, donors and contributors at 10 a.m. March 14 and to the general public beginning at 10 a.m. March 15. Tickets can be purchased at the UT Ticket Office or by calling (419) 530-4653 (GOLD).
