Toledo’s top pitcher struggled mightily on March 2 as the Rockets lost the series opener at Furman University 8-3 in Greenville, S.C.
With the loss, the Rockets dropped to 3-4 on the season while Furman ran its record to 5-5.
Junior Mike Hamann (0-2, 6.32 ERA) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with three walks in just four innings of work. After giving up just one run in the season opener, Hamann has given up 14 runs (11 earned) in 10.1 innings. He has given up over four runs in two of three starts this season after not giving up more than three in all of his nine starts in 2010.
Freshman shortstop Dan Zuchowski led Toledo offensively with three hits and two RBI. Sophomore catcher James Miglin also collected a pair of hits with a run and an RBI.
After Hamann left the game, freshman Alec Schmenk and sophomore Cameron Palmer each threw two scoreless innings of relief.
Furman took a 4-1 lead after two innings before the Rockets cut the lead to 4-3 in the third. The Paladins added a pair of runs in the next two innings and cruised to the 8-3 victory.
