Charlotte holds off Rockets 8-4Written by Zach Davis | | email@example.com
Despite having its ace on the mound, the UT baseball team couldn’t hold off Charlotte in an 8-4 loss on the road. Leading by one in the seventh inning, the 49ers hit a three-run home run to seal the game.
Toledo starter Mike Hamann (0-1, 3.44 ERA) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits in 6.1 innings. The junior right-hander struck out six batters and walked three for the Rockets (2-2).
Senior right fielder Jeff Cola (2 for 4, RBI) and sophomore second baseman Wes White (2 for 4, R) each collected a pair of hits while senior third baseman Joe Corfman had a run and an RBI in three at bats.
The Rockets led 2-1 in the fifth before the 49ers (4-1) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. After adding another run in the sixth, Charlotte’s three-run shot off sophomore reliever Ryan Wilkinson put the lead out of reach. Wilkinson has struggled out of the gate in 2012, allowing a run in each of his three appearances. After having a 2.20 ERA last season, Wilkinson has given up four runs in 1.2 innings (30.00 ERA). Junior Cody Umbright and freshman Andrew Marra finished off the game, throwing a combined 1.2 scoreless innings.
The Rockets continue their three-game series at Charlotte at 4 p.m. Feb. 25. Senior Alex Radon (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will be making his second start of the season after giving up two runs on five hits with six walks in four innings last week at Western Kentucky.
