Rockets take aim at CMU, third straight winWritten by Zach Davis | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Winners of two straight, the UT men’s basketball team will look to stay hot as it takes on Central Michigan at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 in Savage Arena.
The Rockets (13-14, 4-8 Mid-American Conference) are playing as well as they have all season, winning three of their last four. In fact, without two blown double-digit second-half leads to Bowling Green and Buffalo, Toledo’s win streak would be at five games and it would be tied atop the MAC West Division with Eastern Michigan (11-16, 6-6 MAC). Instead, UT remains two games back with four remaining, including a matchup hosting EMU on March 3.
Freshman point guard Juice Brown was recognized last week as the MAC West Player of the Week, totaling 11 points, 6.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game for Toledo. More importantly, however, his production helped the Rockets win a pair of road games over Ball State and Sam Houston State.
Brown took the title from sophomore guard Rian Pearson, who had been named the MAC Player of the Week the previous three weeks. Pearson is a candidate for the league’s Player of the Year award, ranking second in the conference in scoring (16.3), third in rebounds (8.3) and fifth in steals (1.7). He is the only player in the MAC to rank in the top 10 in all three categories, and his rebounding statistics rank him fourth nationally among guards.
Toledo will be going up against a struggling Chippewas team (8-18, 3-9), which has lost 10 of their last 11 matchups. CMU opened conference play this season on Jan. 7 with a 16-point home victory over the Rockets. Central Michigan is led by guard Trey Zeigler, who is fourth in the league in scoring (15.5) and eighth in rebounds (6.6).
