For the third consecutive season, Toledo has been picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference West Division in the league’s baseball preseason poll.
The voting, done by the league’s head coaches, put the Rockets (45 points) nine points behind Central Michigan in the conference voting. Rounding out the division’s scores are Eastern Michigan (43) and Northern Illinois (36), with Western Michigan (21) and Ball State (11).
The Rockets were also one of five schools in the league to receive a vote for winning the MAC. Kent State led the way with seven while Toledo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Miami (Ohio) each had one.
In the MAC East, Kent State (59 points) was chosen as the favorite to win the division over Miami (48), Bowling Green (36), Ohio (34), Akron (17) and Buffalo (16).
Toledo head coach Cory Mee leads the Rocket team in his ninth season. Also returning are six former All-MAC performers: infielders Joe Corfman, Matt Delewski and Mark Lapikas, outfielder Ben Hammer and pitchers Mike Hamann and Matt Kuna.
The Rockets play their first series of the season from Feb. 17-19 against Western Kentucky. Toledo begins the season on a 17-game road streak before it hosts Oakland in its home opener at 3 p.m. March 21.
