Despite trailing by just one point with 13:33 remaining, first-place Akron held off the Rockets, grabbing a 72-56 victory in Rhodes Arena.
UT sophomore guard Rian Pearson did his best to try and pull off the upset, scoring a career-high 29 points on 9-of-18 shooting while grabbing 12 rebounds against the Mid-American Conference East Division leading Zips (15-7, 7-1 MAC). With the loss, the Rockets (10-12, 2-6) fall to three games back of Eastern Michigan in the MAC West with eight conference games remaining.
Pearson’s double-double was his sixth of the season and is just a few days removed from earning MAC Player of the Week honors for his performance last week. He knocked down a career-high 11-of-12 free throws against the Zips.
Freshman point guard Juice Brown (6 of 12) also scored in double-figures with 12 points while recording a team-high five assists.
Akron had five players score in double digits, led by Quincy Diggs’ (4 of 5) 16 points. The Zips shot 60 percent from the field on the game, sinking 30 of 50 shots.
The Rockets return to Savage Arena to take on Buffalo (13-6, 6-2) at 7 p.m. Feb. 4.
