The UT women’s basketball team opened the Mid-American Conference season on the road with a 70-67 loss at Western Michigan on Jan. 5.
Sophomore guard Andola Dortch scored 20 of Toledo’s points in the first half. She made a layup and free throw with 25 seconds remaining to tie the game, but Aurielle Anderson hit a shot with 7 seconds left to give the Broncos (4-10, 1-0 MAC) a 34-32 lead at the half.
Junior forward Lecretia Smith gave UT (7-6, 0-1) a 36-34 lead with a layup two minutes into the second half, but Corie Buchanan gave WMU the lead for good with a basket six minutes later.
Dortch made a layup with 7 seconds remaining to cut the score to 69-67, but Western Michigan split a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Dortch finished the game 7 of 14 from the field and made 13-of-13 free throws for 28 points with four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Junior center Yolanda Richardson shot 7 of 12 from the field and had a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Rockets host Central Michigan at 2 p.m. on Jan. 8.
