Back 9: Tiger Woods To Make Return At FirestoneWritten by Fred Altvater | | BackNine@toledofreepress.com
Tiger Woods announced via twitter that he intends to play at The Bridgestone WGC Championship next week in Akron. After an 11-week layoff to rest and heal his left leg and ankle, he said that he feels fit and ready to tee it up at Firestone.
Tiger is currently 133rd in the FedEx Cup rankings. Only the top 125 are eligible for the playoff series. The Bridgestone makes an excellent event for Tiger’s return. He has had tremendous success at Firestone over the years and the WGC event is an invite only, no-cut tournament. The very next week is the last major of the year, the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. If the leg will hold up, Tiger can get four rounds in at Akron and will have some tournament practice under his belt going into the PGA Championship.
More importantly, some money at Akron will move him into the top 125 and get him into the FedEx Cup playoffs. A win or top finish at the PGA and a win and some top finishes in the playoffs along with a win at the Tour Championship at East Lake Country Club, can you say Player of Year?
Tiger is coming back. Is he ready? Only time will tell. He could still salvage 2011. Last year was a waste and you know he wants to get something out of this year. Could you imagine a win at the PGA or a big finish in the FedEx Cup Playoffs?
