Meeting to address Airport development district
Written by Sarah Ottney | Managing Editor | sottney@toledofreepress.comA joint public meeting of four area boards will discuss setting up an economic development district around the Toledo Airport. The discussion is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Monclova Township administrative offices, 4335 Albon Road, and will include Monclova and Swanton township trustees, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority and City of Toledo.
Supporters say a joint economic development district (JEDD) would allow Northwest Ohio to capitalize on its strategic geographic location and lay the groundwork to entice the creation of intermodal centers. Such centers are designed to handle multiple forms of freight transportation, including land, air and water shipping, and would lead to new jobs and economic development, said Monclova Township Trustee Chuck Hoecherl.
As part of such an agreement, Toledo would provide infrastructure, such as water and sewer lines to designated land within the townships in exchange for a portion of income tax revenue and net business profits from developments within the JEDD.
The boards have been discussing the joint district for several years and have been close to an agreement several times, Hoecherl said.
