600 customers affected by gas line break

An apparent incident with a back hoe has left 600 Columbia Gas of Ohio residents without natural gas service.
Chris Kozak, communications manager for Columbia Gas of Ohio reported that at 9 a.m. on Nov. 12, a four-inch plastic natural gas line was ruptured, which caused a gas leak. This incident occurred on Upton Avenue north of I-475. The parameters in which people are affected are between Jackman Road and Westland and between Marlow and I-475. Columbia Gas responded at 10:35 a.m.
Columbia Gas is making repairs to the damaged line, but there is a specific process that must be followed in order to restore service, Kozak said.
“When there is a natural gas outage, we must go to each house, shut off the service, purge the system, reintroduce natural gas and light the appliances,” Kozak said.
Kozak could not give an estimated time for the repairs to be finished, but said Columbia Gas is prepared to work through the night, bringing crews from across the state to restore service.
