Kaptur, Iott, Jaffe to debate on Oct. 11

Written by Kristen Criswell | | krapin@toledofreepress.com

A Columbus Day debate among the candidates running for the 9th Congressional District seat will take place  Oct. 11.

Marcy Kaptur

Democrat Rep. Marcy Kaptur and her challengers — Republican Rich Iott and Libertarian Joseph Jaffe — will attend a debate sponsored by Toledo Free Press and broadcast live on FOX Toledo. The event will be blogged live at Glass City Jungle. A limited number of tickets will be available for the debate.

Kaptur was first elected to the 9th District seat in 1982 and has since become a member of the Agriculture, Transportation/Housing and Urban Development and Defense Congressional subcommittees.

“The American people have always met the great challenges. I will continue working to build an America that is strong at home and respected abroad,” she stated on her website.

Richard Iott

Iott wants to reduce Washington’s involvement in taxation and borrowing money from overseas. “American workers and American entrepreneurs are the most productive and innovative in the world… they can do anything they set their mind to doing as long as Washington stops throwing financial and regulatory roadblocks in their way,” he told Toledo Free Press.

Iott was the president and CEO of Food Town Supermarkets until 2000 when the company merged with Spartan Foods. He also serves in the Ohio Military Reserve.

Jaffe’s family owns restaurant supplier Tyler Meat Company in Downtown Toledo’s warehouse district. Jaffe does different jobs for the business, including driving a delivery truck, working on assembly lines and working in management.

Joseph Jaffe

“I have a pretty good perspective of both sides [of a business],” he told Toledo Free Press, explaining that he thinks Congress needs more “career people” and fewer career politicians.

The Oct. 11 debate among the three 9th District Congressional candidates will start 7 p.m. at Four Seagate, downtown Toledo, in the FOX Toledo studios lobby. As of now, seating is limited to 125 people, and tickets will be made available to the public Oct. 1.

We have waited a long time for this event. I am glad that Miss Kaptur finally relented and will show up. I would suppose her negative numbers have forced her out to defend her record. Being a small “l” Libertarian and a fiscal conservative I am happy that these ideas will be discussed by the likes of Mr. Iott and Mr. Jaffe.

Such debates bring out and prove nothing. One needs to live through the times to understand what did go on and what is presently happening locally and nationally.

Where will this be held? What time on October 11th? I would really like to get tickets.

Kaptur’s, opposition needs to get a hold of the speech she gave at a union hall a few years ago screaming as if she was a banshee with her hair on fire !
I don’t recall what her beef was however, it had to be about tax cuts or freeing citizens from death and tyranny somewhere in the World…both topics that drive leftist lunatics into absolute delirium !

Then, he needs to obtain her statements calling Champion Spark Plug, GREEDY, for trying to stay solvent in a city ran by radical unionists and their deranged power mad Demonrat cronies !!

Both episodes presents Kaptur, as who she really is. Not the soft spoken “Jim Wright style” -of lying to your face and smiling in a deranged way- all in the hopes that you buy into her and the Demonrats Fascism.

  5. Sherry and others: We updated the story with the ticket information as it’s known now. As we get more details, we’ll pass them on.
    Thank you.

All anyone will get from this debate and others are glorified results that mean nothing along with half truths from Kaptur and her backers.

What is the polling data on this race? Is it even a contest for Marcy this time around?
