Fundraiser at Home Slice for couple trying to adoptWritten by Amy Biolchini | | ABiolchini@toledofreepress.com
A fundraiser will help a couple adopt their first child at a fundraiser 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 at Home Slice Pizza on South St. Clair Street.
Admission to the benefit is $8 for adults and $3 for children, which promises pizza, a live acoustic guitarist and face painting. A silent auction and cash bar round out the event.
All proceeds go to Jessi and Randy Dodds, who are facing an initial cost of $7,500 to their domestic adoption agency, Spirit of Faith Adoptions. Costs include training for the adoptive parents, classes, legal fees and counseling for the birth parents, according to Jessi.
“We began the adoption process in the beginning of this year, after going through two miscarriages …We just want to have a baby,” Jessi said. “Adoption seems like a great way to begin our family as well as give a child a chance in life.”
The Dodds’ pastor, the Rev. Joseph Keblesh Jr. of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, knows the couple and their struggles well.
“Wonderful young couple,” said Keblesh of the Dodds. “They’re now trying to adopt and finding just how expensive it is. We as a parish are trying to raise funds for them.”
Keblesh is the father-in-law of Jamie Keblesh, a longtime friend of the Dodds who is organizing the fundraiser. Jamie said that after St. Matthew’s held a spaghetti dinner for the Dodds that raised $1,500 towards their adoption costs, she wanted to do something that would involve more of the community.
